What is Mass Incarceration?
The phenomenon of mass incarceration is defined by all-time high rates of incarceration ,and the high concentration of incarceration specifically among the male African-American community. This phenomenon is predominantly caused by abnormally long prison sentences, the "War on Drugs",and privatized prisons.
The United States incarceration rate is abnormally high especially when compared with countries like Russia and China. The US criminal justice system tends to focus on punishment more than rehabilitation, which results in a larger percentage of repeat offenders. |
